Airport Unveils “Welcome to Richmond” Mural Created by Local Artists in Concourse A

Conveying a Sense of Place to Richmond Region Visitors
Visitors in Concourse A can now view the new “Welcome to Richmond” mural by Gate 11 and the Market on Broad store. Created by local artists Paris Allen and Christian Kyle Harrell (aka “Humble”), the new mural spotlights an element of the local art scene and helps fuel curiosity about attractions across the Richmond region.
“The Richmond region offers a range of experiences for visitors and the new mural at Richmond International Airport (RIC) highlights some of the most popular attractions of RVA,” said Perry J. Miller, A.A.E., I.A.P., president and CEO of the Capital Region Airport Commission. “Developed by local talent, the mural is an example of sharing the Richmond story to visitors as we remain committed to our mission of providing all customers with an exceptional experience through convenience, innovation, and excellence.”
The concept of the mural was to create a series of images and places representing Richmond within each letter, which would provide passengers a chance to see what they can do while visiting the city and a sort of “recap” of experiences.
“The airport is always a perfect place to showcase the very best of a region,” said Bob Filipp, regional vice president for Delaware North’s travel division. “Much like the food, beverage and retail offerings we’ve curated for our Market on Broad concept, this mural is a testament and a tribute to the endless local treasures in Richmond.”
Attractions highlighted in the mural include the James River, Maymont’s Japanese Garden, local universities, the Hippodrome in Jackson Ward, Richmond Raceway, the Edgar Allan Poe Museum, Virginia’s state bird, the cardinal, and the Capitol.
In a recent story carried by the local CBS affiliate as the mural was being painted, artist Allen noted, “It is going to be something that is going to pop out. Something that is going to be eye-catching as soon as you get off the plane.” And her colleague Harrell added, “Each letter is going to be filled with things that you see around Richmond when you visit.”
The R-I-C-H-M-O-N-D lettering is surrounded by the central idea that Richmond is Virginia’s capital city and was thoughtfully designed using a “Welcome to” postcard style of artwork. The colors in the background, including the outline of the letters (yellow), the light blue sky, and the dark blue with red dogwood flowers are representative specifically of the Virginia state flag.
Surrounding the borders of the postcard are two river features, allowing the image to speak to the nickname of Richmond, the “River City”.
