Airport prepares for winter weather impacts from weekend storm
Richmond International Airport (RIC) is preparing for the upcoming winter weather this weekend and encourages passengers to do the same by allowing extra time and checking their flight status before leaving the house.
“Our team at Richmond International Airport is committed to keeping the airport operating smoothly and is taking the necessary steps to prepare for another winter storm,” said Perry J. Miller, Ph.D., A.A.E., I.A.P., president and CEO of the Capital Region Airport Commission. “Continued low temperatures combined with additional accumulation are likely to present an ongoing challenge, but the airport will be working closely with its airfield partners to prioritize safety and minimize disruptions.”
Flights may be delayed or canceled as a result of the winter weather. Before arriving at the airport, passengers should use their airline’s mobile app or website to check their flight status.
RIC’s snow teams will work alternating 12-hour shifts around the clock to handle snow removal on the airfield, roadways, parking lots, and walkways.
Passengers and greeters visiting RIC during this weather event should use caution driving to and from the airport. Snow removal equipment may be operating on roadways or in parking areas.
Tips and Resources for Passengers
- Confirm plans before arriving. Passengers should have contact information for all airlines, hotels and rental car agencies in preparation for weather-related disruptions.
- Download the myTSA app. This Transportation Security Administration app for mobile devices tracks airport delays, offers travel tips, and posts security checkpoint wait times.
- Review airline inclement weather policies. In the event of inclement weather, air carriers may issue change fee waivers to allow rescheduling to alternate dates.
