RIC’s May Passenger Count Sets All-Time Record

Highest Monthly Total in the Airport’s 95+ Year History, Surpassing the Previous Record Established in Pre-Pandemic August 2019

Richmond International Airport, VA – June 30, 2023

At the June 2023 meeting of the Capital Region Airport Commission, Richmond International Airport (RIC) reported an all-time record of 431,416 passengers for May 2023, surpassing the previous record of 398,592 established in August 2019 by 8.2 percent. The 2023 total also represents a 15.9 percent increase over the same period a year ago.

“Achieving a milestone such as this would not be possible without incredible support from the traveling public and from our air carriers,” said Capital Region Airport Commission president and CEO Perry J. Miller, A.A.E., I.A.P. “We are definitely back on course, growing to support exceptional travel experiences for our customers.”

New or Restored Route Launches

  • Spirit Airlines: Daily Las Vegas (LAS) flights started May 6th.
  • Breeze Airways: New York-Islip (ISP), Jacksonville (JAX), Los Angeles (LAX), and Providence (PVD) – all on May 18th; twice-weekly Cincinnati (CVG) flights started May 19th.
  • Sun Country: Minneapolis/St. Paul (MSP) twice-weekly service started May 19th.
  • Delta: Minneapolis/St. Paul (MSP) daily service started June 5th

Other Matters

  • The Commission welcomed Stephen E. Cummings, Secretary of Finance for the Commonwealth of Virginia, and Anthony Romanello, Executive Director, Henrico Economic Development, to the monthly meeting.
  • The Commission also named the following officers for 2023-2024:
    • Chairman, James M. Holland (Chesterfield)
    • Vice Chairman: Charles S. Macfarlane (Richmond)
    • Secretary: Susan P. Dibble (Hanover)
    • Treasurer: Tyrone E. Nelson (Henrico)
