RIC Reports 5.6% Passenger Traffic Growth for FY15

RICHMOND, Virginia (July 28, 2015)

INCREASES ALSO NOTED FOR CARGO (+2.3%) AND OPERATIONS (+6.9%)

At the monthly meeting of the Capital Region Airport Commission, Richmond International Airport (RIC) reported Fiscal Year 2015 passenger, cargo, and operations activity.

Passenger Traffic: For Fiscal Year 2015, RIC reported a 5.6 percent increase in total passenger traffic versus the previous year (3,429,029 in FY15 versus 3,248,558 in FY14). During the year, one all-time monthly record was set in April.

While growth was widespread, highlights for the year would include Boston taking over as the top destination market for Richmond thanks to increased service from JetBlue and Delta.  Additionally, the airport welcomed the arrival of twice-weekly service by Allegiant to the Tampa Bay area and an extended season of Cancun service via Vacation Express.

Through June, the airport has reported 16 consecutive months of growth.

Cargo: Total cargo, measured as a sum of freight and mail, increased 2.3 percent to 117.1 million pounds (53,100 metric tons) versus the same period a year ago.

Operations: Aircraft movements increased 6.9 percent in FY15. Notably, air carrier operations were up 10.0 percent for the year.

Additional Notes:

  • Newly re-branded Hudson news and gift stores have opened in the Atrium and Concourse A, featuring grab-and-go items made locally by Good Meadow.
  • James River Transportation has newly re-fleeted its RIC operations. On-demand transportation with the company is available via its service counter in the lower-level Arrivals area.
  • The USO Center recently marked its 5th anniversary at the airport and averages about 3,000 visitors per month.
