VMFA’s “It’s a Plane!” Exhibition Opens at RIC
Jul 20, 2015
RICHMOND, Virginia (July 20, 2015)
An exhibition of photographs by Virginia-based artist Will May, called “It’s a Plane!,” opens today at Richmond International Airport (RIC). The show will be on view in the first level of the terminal through January 2016.
This series of eight pictures is arranged in response to a familiar location. Like most of the pictures May makes, it’s an invitation for you to consider your own particular story.
As a child May loved reading. “Images would constantly appear in my mind as I visualized myself in the story, seeing familiar locations and faces unknowable to the author.” As an adult May is interested in how knowledge gained through verifiable facts is combined with unique internal narratives of whom and where we are, and what we have seen.
May lives and works in Charlottesville, Virginia, and is the recipient of the VMFA Visual Arts Fellowships in 2004 and 2015.
The year 2015 marks the 75th anniversary of VMFA’s Fellowship Program. This exhibition is a celebration not only of this landmark but also a celebration of this selected VMFA fellow who has made impressive contributions to the arts in Virginia.
