RIC Urges Customers to Use the ‘90/40’ Planning Rule for Morning Departures

Now that the busy Summer travel season is in full swing, Richmond International Airport (RIC) urges customers to utilize the 90/40 planning rule when traveling this season: arrive at your ticket counter no later than 90 minutes before your flight and plan to be at your gate no later than 40 minutes prior to your departure.

With passenger numbers increasing at RIC, the 90/40 planning rule is a timely reminder to RIC travelers – especially those catching early morning flights – to allow enough time to check in, clear screening, and proceed to their departures gates.

Factoring in drive time, airport parking, processing time at the ticket counter and the security checkpoints mean it’s prudent to be an early bird when traveling by air. In addition, as the weather has begun to heat up in Richmond, so has passenger volume at RIC.

The 90/40 planning rule is especially recommended for “early bird” travelers, or those traveling onboard flights scheduled in the early morning hours, as on a typical day more than 30 percent of RIC’s flights depart prior to 9:00AM. It’s easily the busiest time of day at the airport, seven days a week, and the wait lines at the ticket counters and security checkpoints can be the longest.
