VMFA’s “RVA: A Day in the River City” Exhibition Opens at RIC
Jan 5, 2015
RICHMOND, Virginia (January 5, 2015)
An exhibition of photographs and drawings by Virginia-based artist Carson Jones, called “RVA: A Day in The River City,” opens today at Richmond International Airport (RIC). The show will be on view in the first level of the terminal through July 2015.
This series of Richmond illustrations, paintings, and digital prints by Jones captures an intrinsic warmth that the artist calls “quintessential Richmond-ness.” The scenes are those that Jones encounters while riding his bike around town, a practice that clears his mind and allows him to explore his surroundings.
For Jones, Richmond is small enough to traverse without getting lost, and each area offers a distinct experience of life in the city. “And the city is beautiful,” he says, especially at night, when “the amber glow of the streetlights bouncing off the red brick everywhere gives it a warm feeling that a lot of places don’t have.” Some of the places depicted are historic, and almost all are fairly well known around Richmond. But all of these spots hold some wonder or fond memories for Jones.
Jones is the recipient of a 2014 Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Fellowship. Originally from Richmond, he is currently pursuing an undergraduate degree from Virginia Commonwealth University.
