Construction In Hourly Parking May Cause Detours

Jan 26, 2026

Passengers should allow extra time and follow directional signs

Construction is underway at Richmond International Airport’s (RIC) Center Core Plaza, and visitors to the airport may experience detours within the hourly parking garages.

Starting on Tuesday, January 27, one of the roads connecting the North and South hourly parking garages will be closed until June 2026 due to this capital improvement project. Detours will be in place to direct airport visitors through the garages if either reaches capacity. While minimal impact is expected, visitors are encouraged to allow extra time for parking.

As part of the Center Core Plaza project, new pavement and landscaping plantings will be installed in the wedge-shaped parking area between the garages. Improvements include updated storm drainage, site lighting and furnishings, walkways, and pet relief areas as well as infrastructure for future EV charging stations.

The focal piece of the area will be the first art installation at RIC – a 24-foot-tall sculpture of a dogwood tree and three hummingbirds by artist Matthew Mazzotta titled “Travel Companions.” Airport fans on social media recently suggested names for the birds and later voted, naming them Henry, Hollywood, and Hummie Mae.
