Air Traffic at RIC Rose 3.2% in April 2012

TRAFFIC WAS FUELED BY DOUBLE DIGIT GROWTH FROM LOW COST CARRIERS AIRTRAN AIRWAYS (+14.3%) AND JETBLUE AIRWAYS (+11.8%)

At the monthly meeting of the Capital Region Airport Commission, Richmond International Airport (RIC) released information about key growth in passenger and cargo activity for April 2012.

Passenger Traffic: For April 2012, RIC reports a 3.2 percent increase in total passenger traffic versus the same period a year ago (277,217 in April 2012 vs. 268,657 in April 2011). Passenger enplanements were up 3.1 percent (138,926 vs. 134,724) year over year, while deplanements increased 3.3 percent (138,291 vs. 133,933).

Through the first ten months of FY2012, RIC passenger traffic is down 3.7 percent over the same period a year ago (2,607,988 vs. 2,707,518).

Delta Air Lines was the market share leader for the month, carrying 31.2 percent of RIC passengers, followed by US Airways (21.7 percent) and United (16.8 percent).

Four air carriers, led by AirTran (+14.3%) and JetBlue (+11.8%), reported growth for the month. Delta Air Lines and US Airways also reported year-over-year growth in April.

Cargo: Total cargo, measured as a sum of freight and mail, increased 12.4 percent to 7.77 million pounds (3,525 metric tons) versus the same period a year ago.

Operations: Aircraft movements decreased 2.5 percent in April (8,538 vs. 8,758) versus last year, with air taxi (+5.8 percent) reporting growth.
