Mar 14, 2012

RICHMOND, VA (March 14, 2012)

AIRPORT RECOGNIZED FOR PROMOTING ECONOMIC DIVERSITY AND SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

Outreach to small, women and minority owned businesses recently earned the Capital Region Airport Commission, the owner and operator of Richmond International Airport (RIC), the 2012 Vision of Excellence Award from the Metropolitan Business League. The annual award recognizes a business for promoting economic diversity and supporting small business development.

“We are grateful for this recognition from the Metropolitan Business League,” says Jon Mathiasen, President and CEO of Richmond International Airport. “Outreach to small, women and minority owned businesses is critical to ensuring supplier diversity at the Airport.”

“As a government entity,” Mathiasen adds, “the Commission must select qualified suppliers based on the lowest cost. Greater supplier diversity at the Airport is the direct result of more suppliers knowing about and bidding on potential business opportunities.”

Established in 1971, the purpose of the Metropolitan Business League (www.thembl.org) is to promote economic prosperity in Virginia through leadership, education, training, and advocacy for small, minority, and women owned businesses. The organization provides training and technical assistance, workshops, seminars, and one-on-one counseling to help its members succeed.

“The award is in recognition for the Commission’s conscious efforts to make small and minority owned business aware of opportunities at RIC,” according to Oliver Singleton, President of the Metropolitan Business League. “The Commission’s involvement in the community is something that we encourage all businesses to do.”

Richmond International Airport (RIC) is one of the most modern, well-equipped airports in the eastern United States, with easy access from the highway to the jetway. Eight air carriers currently serve RIC offering nonstop flights to major domestic destinations and connecting service to points around the globe. More than three million passengers and 85 million pounds of cargo travel through RIC annually, utilizing more than 100,000 square feet of warehouse/office space and 1,000,000 square feet of ramp space.
