November Passenger Traffic Increases 3.6% at RIC

Richmond International Airport (RIC) reports passenger traffic for November increased 3.6 percent versus the same period last year. This represents seven consecutive months of passenger growth at RIC and 31 of the last 33 months, as well as the airport’s second-best November ever.

“We are pleased to consistently see the region’s increased economic activity reflected at the airport,” said Capital Region Airport Commission president and CEO Jon E. Mathiasen, A.A.E. “Barring any major disruptions, thanks to incredible local support, RIC is well on its way to reporting a fourth straight year of growth.”

Passenger Growth
November passenger traffic amounted to 301,305 in 2016, up from 290,973 in 2015.  Delta Air Lines was the market share leader in November with 35.7 percent, followed by American (28.9 percent) and United (14.9 percent).  Three air carriers reported year over year passenger growth, including JetBlue (+22.1%), United (+11.9%), and Delta (+5.2%).

Through November, RIC’s passenger traffic in 2016 has increased 1.3 percent (3,273,955 in 2016 vs. 3,231,800 in 2015). For the fiscal year to date, passenger traffic is up 1.8 percent.

Cargo and Operations
Total cargo, measured as the sum of freight and mail, increased 29.9 percent from last November and is up 13.6 percent for the calendar year. In November, aircraft operations decreased 0.3 percent from last year.

Service Notes

  • Beginning June 8th, Delta Air Lines will launch a second daily nonstop flight between Richmond and the airline’s Minneapolis/St. Paul (MSP) hub.
  • On March 1st, OneJet Airlines will inaugurate nonstop service between Richmond and Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT).  Flights to Pittsburgh will go on sale February 1st.
